Salt can be an effective deicer, but more isn’t always better. Salt prematurely ages roads and bridges and degrades freshwater lakes and streams. Merrill is working this winter to implement the following smart salting practices: calibrating equipment, incorporating the use of salt brine, educating operators, and avoiding the overapplication of salt. Like Merrill, dozens of Wisconsin municipalities are striving to improve the winter maintenance programs and slow down the salting of our lakes, streams, and drinking water. Many citizens, however, are not aware of the issue. It’s for this reason that the Wisconsin Salt Wise Partnership, a coalition of organizations across the state working together to reduce salt pollution in our lakes, streams and drinking water, is hosting “Wisconsin Salt Awareness Week” from Monday, January 24th to Friday, January 28th. There was a short agenda with a single ordinance change and a single resolution. The ordinance change was an amendment to the District Zoning Map of the City of Merrill. The parcel at 105 N. Ohio St. was requested for change from Residential to Thoroughfare Commercial to allow for additional parking for the Westside Market. This action passed. The resolution approved a Conditional Use Permit for temporary housing at 1303 W. Main St., the former Westside Fire Station. The Conditional Use Permit will allow the owner of the building, Agra Industries, to utilize the building for short-term employee residence until new employees can find other suitable housing accommodations in the area. This building with its firefighter sleeping accommodations is well suited for this temporary use. This action passed. The reason for this action is the continued need for housing in Merrill, even with the new homes and apartments that have been built recently and continue to be built.
